(No specific amount of weight loss is implied or guaranteed. Weight gain after stopping medications can occur.)
At your first appointment we will discuss the best eating plan for you. Paleo? Whole 30? Intermittent fasting? Not all eating plans are made for everyone.
Do you want to exercise? What have you done in the past that works? We will discuss the best plan for you. Most people have to do some kind of exercise to keep weight off.
Let's face it, the reason you are coming to a weight loss clinic is because diets and exercise have not helped in the past. After a thorough medical history we will discuss the best medications for you. Some patients may need only one medication. Some may need multiple medications. Some may need to change medications after several weeks.
These medications are fairly new to the market and can be quite expensive if not covered by insurance. They are weekly injectable medications that decrease appetite and cause the stomach to empty more slowly. Many people can have very significant weight loss on these medications. If you have any family or personal history of pancreatitis or thyroid cancer you cannot take these medications.
These medications work to decrease appetite and cravings. They may be given individually or as combinations. They are generally covered by insurance.
Orlistat works by blocking the absorption of dietary fat in the intestines, thereby reducing the amount of calories that the body takes in from fat. Orlistat is available over-the-counter or in prescription strength. When taken with meals, Orlistat attaches to enzymes in the digestive system that break down fat, preventing them from working properly. This undigested fat is then eliminated from the body through bowel movements.
Acarbose may help with weight management by reducing calorie absorption. Acarbose slows down the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates in the small intestine. This means that fewer calories from carbohydrates are absorbed into the bloodstream, potentially resulting in a lower calorie intake overall. By helping to control blood sugar levels, acarbose can improve insulin sensitivity. This can be beneficial for weight management, as improved insulin sensitivity may help regulate appetite and reduce the likelihood of overeating. Acarbose may help stabilize blood sugar levels and reduce post-meal spikes. This can lead to a more consistent feeling of fullness after meals, potentially reducing cravings and the likelihood of snacking on high-calorie foods.
Metformin can help reduce appetite, leading to a decrease in calorie intake. It does this by affecting certain hormones involved in hunger and satiety, such as ghrelin and leptin. It helps the body use insulin more effectively, which can result in better regulation of blood sugar levels. Improved insulin sensitivity can help prevent excessive hunger and cravings, leading to reduced calorie intake.
Injectable vitamins may be used when losing weight too rapidly or when energy is low from decreased calorie intake. We will discuss these if it is determined you need them.
